Eureka Volunteer Fire Department 1910

History

The Eureka Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1887. The unit totaled 60 men operating 3 running teams; The Maroon Running Team, The Felton Hose Company, The Mechanics Hook and Hose Company. The running teams were maintained until the late 1890's when they were replaced by motorized vehicles. Horse carts were never used in the city of Eureka.

The 3 individual company running teams known only as the Maroon Running Team engaged in many competitions with other fire companies from as far away as Kansas City, and won a good share of victories. The contest tested the speed and efficiency of the teams with such events as running a hundred yards and scaling a ladder, attaching a length of hose, and other fire fighting skills.*

Today, the Eureka Volunteer Fire Department (EVFD) operates with 25 volunteers and several reserve volunteer firefighters. The department maintains 3 fire engines and a rescue truck. EVFD provides primary fire coverage for the City of Eureka, the department also responds to rescue calls throughout the county. Greenwood County covers 1296 square miles and is the second largest county in the State of Kansas. EVFD responds with Greenwood County EMS on rescue calls, and provides mutual aid for Greenwood County Fire Department.

Meetings are held twice a month, Generally on the second and fourth Thursday. If you are interested in volunteering, contact the fire department offices for further details.
